WHERE THE TIGERS BREED

“ Survey of Asia’s Emerging Economies, “ November, 1991 ( The Economist )

By : Hendra S Raharjaputra

The article reminded me , when I attended lectures of Business International at one of reputable business school in Indonesia ( PPM Business School ) in 1991-1993 . I was not graduate from well known overseas university as many students dreamed it, but hopefully this article will give contribution for the readers.

I just want to excerpt some sentences   written by the economist :  “ Four decades ago , Asia seemed condemned to poverty. Half of Japan’s workforce was in the fields; the other half in factories that were only 15 % as productive as America’s . “ Made in Japan “ meant gimcrack. Shanghai , previously one of Asia’s most dynamic cities , had fallen to Mao’s Communist ; its refugees streamed on to a hopeless little island called Taiwan. Korea was poorer than Sudan and on the brink of a devastating civil war. Hong Kong and Singapore were busy ports , but not a lot more. The four economic” tigers” of East Asia South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong – have forged the fastest industrial revolutions the world has ever seen. Behind them are another countries which are getting close to the point of industrial take off – Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and , most interestingly, China “.

At that time , we were proudly being a country  that predicted would be one the tigers of Asia , it’s mean the tiger will breed “ the champ “ to cater, to reduce the poor .

I just want to share the readers of the article , please check out at the below list where the Indonesia’s companies are  . Are The Real Tigers  China, South Korea, Malaysia, India, Taiwan, Thailand ?  Not predicted country, India, showing up as a “ Black Horse “ .
